Wilder Wood

In Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Wilder Wood, with its gently rolling wooded area and its meadows, forms a green enclave in a residential neighbourhood, but also a fabulous site for adventure.

The first mentions of the site go back to the Middle Ages. It was part of the “Hof Ter Wilst” domain recorded in the 13thcentury. Wilder Wood is made up of a wooded hill with spontaneous woodland vegetation, hilly paths, a stream (the Parucqbeek), small springs, pools, a pond, and wetlands, but also kitchen gardens grown by private individuals and a meadow planted with fruit trees.

The location is ideal for observing nature and its plant and animal biodiversity: rare or interesting plants in the undergrowth, large trees and shrubs with berries that attract birds, amphibians that populate the pond and the pools, and nocturnal mammals – hedgehogs, shrews, rabbits, weasels, dormice, etc.

The development of Wilder Wood has aimed to preserve the natural and “wild” character of the site while controlling activities that could cause damage there. It is thus the result of a compromise between the ecological and social functions of the site.
