Ferme nos Pilifs

The Ferme Nos Pilifs non-profit organisation is a sheltered work enterprise that provides jobs for disabled persons. A workshop for handling and mailing activities has been designed so as to minimise its environmental impact.
The building is largely subterranean and covered with a green roof. A wood-fired boiler fed by wood chips resulting from farm operation provides heat for the building. Heating needs have been reduced by good insulation and controlled ventilation: they do not exceed 15 kWh/m²/yr (Brussels average: 106).
Eighty square metres of photovoltaic panels provide a significant part of the electricity need: 6800 kWh/yr. Water management is provided by rainwater recovery and a natural filtration system requiring no energy for waste water. In 2001 and 2004, Ferme Nos Pilifs received the “ecodynamic enterprise” label granted by Brussels Environment.
