Boitsfort Pond and the Domaine des Silex
With the Plateau de la Foresterie and the nearby Vuylbeek and Enfants Noyés nature and forest reserves, this site constitutes a remarkable biological and environmental ensemble. The area is recognised as a Natura 2000 site and has a management centred on development of nature and biodiversity.
The “Domaine des Silex” owes its name (silex, flint) to the discovery of a Neolithic site in the Forest of Soignes almost a century ago.
The locale is very interesting from the point of view of landscape; along with two ponds (Boitsfort and Nieuwenvijver) there are large grassy expanses punctuated by isolated trees and an old orchard. The differences in relief modulate the landscape, emphasised by groves of ashes and alders and small wooded beds where the ash, poplar, sycamore maple, oak, hornbeam, hazelnut tree and elder predominate.
The managers of the site do not use pesticides, letting nature have its way, favouring indigenous plants, leaving dead wood as shelter for hedgehogs and other amphibians, etc. Vuylbeek stream, previously buried in concrete pipes, has been reopened there.
